Many people know that there is such a specialty as dog training, but not everyone knows what it is and what exactly dog trainers do.
What does the word cynology mean? Cynology (from the Greek KYON – dog and LOGOS – doctrine) is the science of dogs, which studies everything about these animals: breed characteristics, behavior and character, training, care and nutrition, etc. As for a dog handler, it is a specialist who works with dogs.
The historical roots of dog training as a profession go back to the depths of the centuries BC. Back then, ancestors tamed four-legged animals to help them in hunting or pasturing. Thus, nomadic steppe tribes preferred herding dogs, the ancient Assyrians preferred fighting dogs, and in Greece, they valued decorative dog breeds.
In its modern form and understanding, the profession of dog training emerged only in the second half of the 19th century.
In general, cynology is not an easy profession, and dog handlers are not born, they become them at the call of the heart.
To become a true specialist, a dog handler must have a strong character, be brave, patient, purposeful, persistent, and have good physical fitness, and most importantly, love dogs, because it is impossible to work with animals and not love them.
In the Border Guard Service, the dog service has always been and remains important. After all, it is the dog handlers who, together with their four-legged partners, detect explosives and drugs, as well as detain offenders.
To become a border guard dog handler, you need to undergo training at the Dog Training Center of the State Border Guard Service. The basic training course lasts six months. During this time, dog handlers not only train dogs, but also study anatomy, animal psychology and training methods. Upon completion of training, dog handlers receive certificates, and their four-legged partners receive certificates.
So, dog training is a true vocation. One life and one service for two – this is how one can characterize the work of every dog handler.
